Meet the Tuscarora Men Who Made History

We sat down with many Scouting alumni to collect their thoughts on what made Scouting such an important part of their lives. These interviews, conducted in December 2009, shares information about camp experiences and life lessons. The men range in age from young adult to senior Scouts in their 90s.




Brigadier General Al Aycock
Brigadier General Al Aycock is the Deputy Commanding General of the U.S. Army Installation Management Command, serving since February 2009. He grew up in Goldsboro and participated in Boy Scouts during the 1960s. He credits the program as being the foundation of many of his life's successes.

Dick Auger

Mr. Auger, now in his 90s, was a longtime Scout Executive with the Tuscarora Council.

Bill and Tom Bland

The Bland brothers were Scouts during the 1950s with Scoutmaster C.H. Westin. The men, who remain lifelong friends with the Sykes brothers and Richard Wynn, share some of their adventures.

G. Daughtry

Mr. Daughtry embarked for Philmont in 1958. He describes his long journey and wilderness adventure.

A.W. Griffin, Jr.

Mr. Griffin, now 82-years-old, was a member of Troop 1.

T. Griffin

T. Griffin participated in the pilgrimage to Bath. He led the hike on a bicycle built for two. 

Bob Hill

Mr. Hill joined Scouting during the 1940s with Troop 4. He has been a longtime council leader.

Glenn Moon

Mr. Moon, age 90, was a longtime council commissioner. He began Scouting as a Lone Scout.

Patton/Clifton

Stuart Patton and Tommy Clifton, both in their 70s, were part of Troop 34.

Banks Peacock

Mr. Peacock was a member of Troop 11. He was a participant in the 1968 pilgrimage to Bath.

Rick Pridgen

Mr. Pridgen, a board member for the Tuscarora Council, has continually been registered with Scouting since he was 6-years-old. He continues to give back to the program because of what it has given him.

Andy Stevens

Mr. Stevens was an Eagle Scout from Troop 66. He credits Scouting with the values and self reliance it taught.

John Sykes

The Sykes brothers were Scouts during the 1950s with Scoutmaster C.H. Westin. The men, who remain lifelong friends with the Bland brothers and Richard Wynn, share some of their adventures.

Glenn Sykes

The Sykes brothers were Scouts during the 1950s with Scoutmaster C.H. Westin. The men, who remain lifelong friends with the Bland brothers and Richard Wynn, share some of their adventures.

Richard Wynn

Mr. Wynn was a Scout during the 1950s with Scoutmaster C.H. Westin. He remains lifelong friends with the Bland and Sykes brothers. 

Tom Yarboro

Mr. Yarboro, current president of the Tuscarora Council, says that mentoring is a crucial part of Scouting. He credits the program for teaching both himself and others values, leadership, communication and resource management skills.
