Resources
for Cub
Scout School Nights and Round-Ups
The
Tuscarora Council is taking a new approach to our School Nights. These
events, which will run in all districts in September and October, will
allow us to introduce boys to the Scouting program and also identify
potential adult leaders in a fun and non-threatening way. Check out
these resources for your unit:
School
Night for Scouting for Cubmasters - A step-by-step guide for
Cubmasters to help them plan for successful School Nights, recruit new
leaders and introduce parents to the Scouting program.
School
Night for Scouting Agenda - This helpful agenda leads Cubmasters and
pack leadership through a successful one hour meeting.
Parent
and Family Talent Survey - Identify parents' areas of interests and
help them plug into the pack.
The
Newspaper Game - Use a pile of newspapers and some tape to create
fun costumes! A fun and creative way to identify potential Cub
leaders.
Parent
Orientation Meeting - To be held within one week of your School
Night. This helpful agenda discusses pack structure, upcoming events,
leadership roles and more.
Guide
for Parents of New Cub Scouts - This informational booklet will be
given to parents at the School Night so they can review it before the
parent orientation meeting.
Guidebooks for New Cub Scout Leadership -
These guides, listed in the Training section, are designed to help new
den leaders, pack committee members, Webelos den leaders, tiger cub den
leaders and cubmasters.
Important
Note: Please allow your DE to schedule School Night/Round-Up with the
principals in your district.
Troop
Open Houses Are Great Recruitment Tools for Boy Scouts
The Boy Scout Troop
Open House allows a Troop to swing open its doors and roll out the red
carpet to welcome guests. It provides a forum to show off Scouting
activities and the Troop’s accomplishments. It is an effective tool to
reach youth who have never tried Scouting.
Hosting a Troop Open House is a
five-step process that has been tried and proven in Troops throughout
the nation. Each of the following five steps is vital to the event’s
success:
• Present a school rally to
fifth- and sixth-graders
• Mail the parents of interested
youth a personal invitation to the Troop Open House.
• Follow the invitation with a
telephone call to the parents.
• Host the Troop Open House for
youth and their parents.
• Organize a Troop or attend a
District activity to involve new Scouts right away.
Youth join Scouting for the fun and outdoor
adventure. Parents want them to join for completely different reasons -
character building and leadership training. Following this plan for
conducting a Troop Open House will help you address the needs of both
youth and parents.
